The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) is a federal agency in Nigeria (attached to the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology), of which the main responsibility is to develop and utilize industrial raw materials in Nigeria. In the 1980s, Nigeria witnessed a reduction in foreign exchange earnings from the petroleum industry, which was mainly used to import raw materials and products that could have been self-sufficient at that time. As a result, the RMRDC was established in Lagos on February 10, 1988. Currently, headquartered in Abuja, the RMRDC has set up offices in all 36 states and the Federal Capital. Its mission is to build new resource-based industries and boost the employment rate and GDP by exploiting Nigeria's abundant industrial raw materials.
